SDUHSD Concurrent Off-Campus Course Practices
- SDUHSD does not recommend any off-campus or out-of-district institution or course. All students have opportunities to take a broad range of courses from the district course of study and for remediation, and options to fulfill all district, state, and college admission requirements on campus.
- Students who wish to pursue concurrent off-campus, non-district coursework must be enrolled at a district high school while attending the concurrent off-campus class to receive credit on an SDUHSD transcript. No student may begin to acquire high school credits until the day after the completion of the 8th grade. Middle school students may not place off-campus classes on their SDUHSD transcript.
- No more than 30 credits from concurrent off-campus college courses, private instruction, or public school courses may be transferred onto the high school transcript.
- If a student is repeating a previously taken course by taking an off-campus class, all courses taken and earned grades will remain on the SDUHSD transcript. For SDUHSD GPA calculation, only SDUHSD courses will count as repeats of SDUHSD courses with the exception of standardized courses (e.g. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Project Lead the Way) with the exact same course title and identical standard curricular content.
Per Board Policies 6146.1, 6146.11, and 6146.3, the district shall grant credit toward high school graduation for coursework successfully completed at a community college, state college, public or private institution provided that all of the following conditions are met.
PRIVATE/PUBLIC INSTRUCTION
PRIVATE/PUBLIC INSTRUCTION
PRIVATE/PUBLIC INSTRUCTION
Credit will be granted toward high school graduation for private/public instruction under the following conditions only:
- The institution that issues the official transcript must be currently fully accredited by one of the six regional accrediting agencies as a school offering courses leading to a high school diploma or appear on the school's University of California approved list, as aligned with UC/CSU practices. In California, the agency is the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (directory); outside of California, there are regional equivalents. Courses taken through providers that are accredited by WASC only as Supplementary Education Programs will not be accepted for credit.*
- The subject is included in the district’s course of study.
- An “Off-Campus Course Permission Request Form” must be signed by the student/ parent/ guardian, and approved by the counselor prior to a student enrolling in the private/public instruction off-campus course.
- The student shall receive the same letter grade for the high school credit as is granted by the private/ public instruction school. No weighted grade credit will be granted with the exception of College Board Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses that are weighted by the University of California. AP courses must be on the outside school’s AP Course Ledger for the year taken in order to be placed on the transcript. (Note: Students who take AP courses off-campus and who would like to register to take the optional AP exam are not guaranteed a space to take an AP exam at one of the SDUHSD AP exam locations. They may be placed on the SDUHSD exam waitlist.)
- Upon completion of the course, the student must submit an official transcript that includes grade issued and credit earned, as evidence from the off-campus school showing that the student successfully completed the course.
- Once off-campus credits are placed on a transcript as an official record, they may not be removed.
COLLEGE COURSES
COLLEGE COURSES
COLLEGE COURSES
Credit will be granted toward high school graduation for coursework successfully completed at a fully accredited college under the following conditions only:
- An “Off-Campus Course Permission Request Form” must be signed by the student/parent/guardian, and approved by the counselor prior to a student enrolling in the off-campus college course.
- The subject is included in the district’s course of study.
- A single (3 or more unit) college course is equal to a 5-credit high school course on the SDUHSD transcript. Some college courses may be eligible for 10 credits on the SDUHSD transcript. The Superintendent or designee must pre-approve 10 credit college courses.
- Once off-campus credits are placed on a transcript as an official record, they may not be removed. The student shall receive the same letter grade for the high school credit as is granted by the college. College courses do not receive weighted grades on SDUHSD transcripts.
